NOTE: These instructions don't include installation of drivers for the RTL dongles, and therefore are not very useful.

1. Download and Install a 32 Bit Version of Python

I recommend the Anaconda Python distribution as it has a nice easy installer and comes with almost everything you need. Just get it here and double click to install.

  1. INSTRUCTIONS how to install GNU RADIO 3.6.4.1 on Windows 7 (32 bit) Most probably, these will work for Windows XP and 8 (32 bit) as well. I wanted to install GNU Radio 3.6.4.1 on Windows 7 and found some excellent instructions here (click).
  2. GNURadio can be installed on Windows, OS X and Linux Operating Systems. Linux is by far the easiest and is well supported. Installation on Windows is becoming more routine and installers are now available from Ettus Research. OS X installation is possible through MacPorts. All installations now include the GNURadio Companion (GRC).
  3. Binary installers for 64-bit Windows 7/8/10 are now available here. These include all dependencies for Windows, a custom python distro, commonly used SDR drivers, and several OOT blocks. There is also a build available at that includes GnuRadio, Pothos, CubicSDK and other tools. Installing GNU Radio and USRP on Windows is becoming more routine.
  4. Windows binary install. Install the latest uhd installer from here. In the installer wizard, choose to add uhd to the system path. Install the latest gnuradio installer from here. In the installer wizard, choose to add gnuradio to the system path.

2. Download and Install PyGTK

GNURadio Windows Build Scripts v1.6. A series of Powershell scripts to automatically download, build from source, and install GNURadio and -all- it's dependencies as 64-bit native binaries then package as an.msi using Visual Studio 2015.

One package that Anaconda doesn't include that GNURadio depends on is PyGTK. After installing Anaconda, download and install PyGTK from here. The default settings are fine.

3. Install Python Packages

GNURadio requires a couple of additional Python packages. Open a Command Prompt as administrator by finding 'Command Prompt' in the Start menu, right clicking on it, and selecting 'Run as administrator'. In the new window, execute the command 'conda install cheetah'. Once that finishes you can close the terminal window.

4. Download and Install GNURadio

Now we're ready to install GNURadio. Grab the Windows binary here and double click.

5. Configure PATH

The last thing you have to do is add GNURadio's libraries to your system PATH and PYTHONPATH. Open the control panel and navigate to 'System Properties'. Under the 'Advanced' tab, click the 'Environment Variables' button. Under 'System variables', click 'New' and add a variable called 'PYTHONPATH' with the value C:Program Files (x86)gnuradiolibsite-packages.

You can now run GNURadio Companion from the Start menu (it should be under 'gnuradio').

I find that the file generated by file sink block is binary format,which can not edit by gedit under linux or something else,So how can i edit the file?

I send a dat file contains 'hello world' and I want to recieve a file contains 'hello world'

This is asked very often. So here's a link to the FAQ and the excerpt:

All files are in pure binary format. Just bits. That’s it. A floating point data stream is saved as 32 bits in the file, one after the other. A complex signal has 32 bits for the real part and 32 bits for the imaginary part. Reading back a complex number means reading in 32 bits, saving that to the real part of a complex data structure, and then reading in the next 32 bits as the imaginary part of the data structure. And just keep reading the data.

The exception to the format is when using the metadata file format. These files are produced by the File Meta Sink: http://gnuradio.org/doc/doxygen/classgr_1_1blocks_1_1file__meta__sink.html block and read by the File Meta Source block. A one-line Python command to read the entire file into a numpy array is:

Replace the dtype with scipy.int16, scipy.int32, scipy.float32, scipy.complex64 or whatever type you were using.

So your question 'How do I edit this?' boils down to understanding that this is raw data. You can of course just modify this on a byte level (e.g. using a hexeditor), but usually, you'd have (or write) some program that loads the data into an in-program represenation (e.g. an array of complex numbers) and look at that.

The way you're asking this suggests you're not really aware of what you're looking at (because you don't even mention how you transmit that string). Maybe your data has bit errors due to symbol errors due to noise? Quite possibly, there's no synchronization done, so your received bits did not end up on the same byte order as you meant them to be sent etc.
